I visited Dundee last week to attend the opening of the EXPO 2023 Exhibition, where my work is being shown, and take part in the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design Research Away Day.  You may recall that I submitted a handmade concertina book of the practice I had undertaken with fellow PhD student Katie Hart Potapoff.  It was a great day and worth the very long journey from Skye, taking nearly eight hours.

Sunrise over the Tay, Dundee – Alison Price, January 2023

I woke early to a beautiful sunrise over the Tay.  It was uplifting to see the sun before 9 am.

The Away Day was very useful and we heard from Research Centre Leads working towards a new Art and Design Research Strategy.  After lunch, we had a series of inspiring presentations from staff and research students – from the writing and production of an opera film, the use of photogrammetry in forensic scenes, the concept of “Haneen” (longing, yearning) in Palestinian art and a presentation of soft sound spheres designed for use by the elderly.  We then had the opportunity to view EXPO 2023, talk to other exhibitors and hear more about their work.  The image below is the work that Katie and I presented – two concertina books – Katie’s was deconstructed and mine very much intact.
