The Recursive Loop – A Practice-Led Research Model – Alison Price

With practice embedded in the centre of my research and the model above, several intersecting recursive loops represent insights discovered in practice and developed through my ontology, epistemology, methodology and methods.  In this post, I will refer back to some of my blogs, referred to in my thesis as insights, that were damascene in their impact either through a realisation, understanding, or a change in direction in my practice or research.  In future posts, I will explain a little more about these insights and how and why they were significant.

This post, written in the final days of my MA, as I produced my Critical Review of Practice, in hindsight represents a philosophical turn in my photographic practice.  The dissatisfaction with presence and sensory perception I speak of in this post, combined with my reading of Graham Harman’s Object-Oriented Ontology (2018) in December of the same year led me to the decision to undertake doctoral studies.

A formative period of practice “Among Trees” was to be transformative in my search for essence as I began to see the trees as a collective with a reality, connectedness and interiority of its own.

While accepting much of Graham Harman’s speculative realism, I began to question his explanation of how objects “touch without touching” – what he calls “vicarious causation”.

On a day of wet weather, I do not leave the car but take still videos through my car windscreen.  As the gloopy rain falls, I see a world of revealing and concealing objects – a Heideggerian world, and also Harman’s world.  A world revealed through perceptive and dynamic awareness.
